The language schools are usually named after the city they are in, so it is easy to find and compare them. Look for courses titled “Deutsch als Fremdsprache“ (German as a foreign language).


Language Levels in Austria

When you sign up for a German class in a language school in Austria you have to take an initial exam to evaluate your German level (from A1 to C2). Then, you will be placed in a course that matches your level.


What does level A1 or B1 mean? There are six language levels  (A1, A2, B1, B2, C1, C2), according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). Level A1 is for beginners. In these classes you learn the basics of a language. Level C2 corresponds to the language level of a native speaker.
