Even though many host families in England pay for the language courses, they are not obliged to. Officially, au pairs have to pay for their language classes. So, just ask your host family if they are willing to help you with the costs.

The different language courses, workshops and language certificates in England can be divided into three categories:

  1. government institutions
  2. private institutions
  3. language institutes



Private Language Schools - If you want to take classes in a private language school, you should be willing to pay more, as these classes are more expensive.


State Schools - The government-run language schools, such as the Colleges for Further Education or the Local Adult Education Centres are considerably cheaper.


Prices and Costs

The price for a language course in England depends on the length and difficulty of the course. Prices vary a lot, depending on the language school, but are similar to the prices in other European countries.


The English School Year

The school year in England is divided into trimesters. The first trimester starts in mid-September and goes until December. The second trimester is from January to April and the last trimester goes from April to July.


Exams and Language Certificates

As an au pair in England, you will have the opportunity to take written and oral exams at almost every language school. With a language certificate, you can improve your career prospects. You will have more opportunities when you apply for a job, and it will be easier for you to get into a British university.



The English language exams have 3 parts:

  • reading comprehension and written expression (about 1 hr. 10 min.),
  • listening comprehension (about 30 min.)
  • oral expression (about 10 min.).


Language Levels in England

Cambridge  was one of the founding members of the Association of Language Testers in Europe (ALTE), which helped develop the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). The CEFR is the official European framework for evaluating language levels. There are 6 levels: A1, A2, B1, B2, C1, C2. A1 stands for beginner while C2 corresponds to the level of a native speaker.
