Duration of Language Courses in France

There are 3 different types of courses:

  1. year-long courses
  2. semester courses
  3. summer courses


The first semester in a language school goes from October to February, with three classes per week. It is also possible to sign up for a language course at a university and take French classes for free. However, the university courses are 15 hours per week, which might be difficult to combine with the au pair working schedule. There are also au pair organizations that offer language courses especially for au pairs.


Costs and Prices

Usually, au pairs pay for their language classes. However, some host families might be be willing to help financially. For example, some host families pay their au pairs 10 Euros extra per week to help with the language classes. A language course in a private language school costs around 100 to 150 Euros. Intensive classes are the fastest way to learn the language, but they are also the most expensive courses. They can last up to 10 hours per day.



Most language courses in France end with an official exam. The best known certificate is the Diplôme Approfondi de Language Francaise (DALF) issued by the French Department of Education. It is also the exam foreign students need to pass in order to attend a French university.


Language Levels in France

The Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) is the basis for evaluating your language level in Europe. There are 6 levels: A1, A2, B1, B2, C1, C2. A1 stands for beginner while C2 corresponds to the level of a native speaker.
