Language Courses in Spain

Working as an au pair in Spain you will also have the opportunity to take language classes. Your host family can help you find a good language school close by. It is very important to take Spanish classes, as it will considerably improve your language skills. Also, it is a great opportunity to meet new people, make new friends, and even meet travel mates.

 

Course Length

The length of a course depends on the language school and also on your working schedule. Usually, one lesson lasts about 1 – 2 hours per day, 2 or 3 times a week. You can only take language courses during the school year. During the school vacation, most language schools are closed.

 

Costs

Usually, the au pair has to pay for the language course. However, if you talk to your host family, they might agree to help you pay for your classes.

 

Language Level

When you sign up for a language course you will have to take an initial exam to evaluate your Spanish level (A1 to C2). After this, you will be placed in the appropriate language course.

 

The Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) is the basis for evaluating your language level in Europe. There are 6 levels: A1, A2, B1, B2, C1, C2. A1 stands for beginner while C2 corresponds to the level of a native speaker. You can find more information about language schools and certificates in Spain at the Instituto Cervantes.
