REQUIREMENTS FOR YOU AS AN AU PAIR IN AUSTRIA

Age of an au pair:

LANGUAGE REQUIREMENTS FOR AN AU PAIR IN AUSTRIA

Knowledge of German. As a citizen of the European Union you need a translated certificate of having completed a  German course .

In  Austria it is required that you take German classes within the first six months of your au pair stay.   

WORK HOURS PER WEEK FOR AN AU PAIR IN AUSTRIA

According to Austrian law, your  work hours per week as au pair cannot exceed 20 hours (including baby sitting at night).    As an  au pair in Austria , you are entitled to have at least one day off per week. POCKET MONEY PER MONTH FOR AN AU PAIR IN AUSTRIA

As an au pair in Austria you get  395.31 euros as pocket money . The Federal Union Office (Bundeseinigungsamt) in Austria establishes the exact amount. Follow the link to their website for more information.   As an au pair in Austria, you also receive two vacation bonuses and a Christmas bonus; there are a total of 15 payments for an au pair per year. Often, host families also pay for your  German course or for your transportation costs – if there is no car available for you as an au pair. 

DURATION OF THE AU PAIR STAY IN AUSTRIA

 
6-12 months  (if you haven’t worked as an au pair in Austria during the previous 5 years).

At least two weeks before you start working as an au pair in Austria you have to register your au pair job with the Austrian Employment Service (“Arbeitsmarktservice Österreich” (AMS).


You need to fill out a special form called „registering of an au pair working relation“ and bring a copy of your au pair contract (you can download both from our download center). The entire procedure costs 25 Euros and you will receive a confirmation from the AMS for 6 months. To stay longer, you have to extend this certificate for 6 more months (the extension is due 4 weeks before the termination of your first au pair work certificate in Austria).

HEALTH INSURANCE FOR AN AU PAIR IN AUSTRIA

Normally, your  host family in Austria takes out a health insurance for you as their au pair. Therefore, they also pay for all the costs related to your health insurance.    As you earn less than the minimum wage as an  au pair in Austria it is sufficient to register you with a regional accident insurance. They will be happy to answer all of your questions.  Your  host family in Austria has to register you as their au pair with social security in Austria. This means that they also have to pay contributions for you as an au pair, according to the ” Employees’ and Independent Workers’ Prevention Law .” (“Company Employee and Self-Employed Pensions Act” (BMSVG) . 

DRIVER’S LICENSE AS AU PAIR IN AUSTRIA

As an  au pair in Austria it is not necessary for you to have a driver’s license. But a license can improve your chances of finding work as an au pair in Austria . 
 

COSTS OF YOUR AU PAIR STAY IN AUSTRIA

Before you travel to  Austria you have to complete a German course in your home country or you have to prove your German level with a translated certificate. Your certificate will only be recognized in Austria if it is in German.    Depending on if you hire an  au pair agency or not, you might have to pay a fee. You also have to add your travel expenses to your general costs .
